Expanding our hydrographic surveying capabilities
Thew Associates PE-LS, PLLC is pleased to announce the acquisition of an 8-foot by 24-foot self-propelled spud barge to expand our hydrographic surveying capabilities to include sediment sampling utilizing vibracore technology.
The barge is equipped with a “moon pool” for water based geotechnical and environmental drilling and sampling, and can serve as a drilling platform for a small skid mounted drill rig (e.g. CME-45) or a direct push unit (e.g. Geoprobe 6600).
Unlike many floating platforms, this barge can be launched and loaded from a boat launch, thus saving costly crane expenses. Obviously, if a water body does not have a boat launch then a crane will be required to set and remove the barge from the water body.
The barge is currently being retrofitted in accordance with our specifications and will be primed and painted a “more suitable” color.
Water based projects typically have a bathymetric surveying and subsurface investigation component; therefore the addition of the barge will allow Thew associates to perform both services in-house.
Thew Associates provides hydrographic surveying to include single- and multi-beam bathymetric surveying and mapping, velocity surveys utilizing acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP), side-scan sonar, and sub bottom profiling.
Thew Associates has two captains licensed to operate up to 50-ton vessels on inland navigable waterways, and has staff with extensive experience utilizing vibracore and other sediment sampling technologies.
The barge will also be available for rent to include a licensed captain and RTK GPS/GNSS navigation and positioning.
